Wonderful story about a wonderful leader whom I love very dearly. One can still love and appreciate both the church and those who lead it and still have legitimate concerns about doctrine and historical events. Christ came to the earth to bring greater light and truth. He gave his life for this purpose. That unyielding desire that many of us have to know the whole truth, is a testament to His work. I believe, that because our church is so very good and immeasurably strong, it could stand even after all truths were revealed. I long for that day.

CAW,

Your point is exactly what I thought of when I read this post.

President Monson had the faith that his wife would be healed and in my opinion, the most important thing he said to the doctor was "she is in the Lord's hands."

However, he didn't stop there. He believes in a God of miracles, as the Book of Mormon talks about and had full faith that if it were God's will (which it sounded like he already knew what God's will was) that she would recover. Had God told him that it wasn't His will to keep her, he would have had faith in God as she was in His hands.

I'm not sure if you remember the talk given a few years ago in General Conference on this subject, but it was called "But if Not" and is worth a read. Here's the link:

I've just been studying the book of Daniel and reminded of the faith of 3 young faithful Hebrews we know as Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego. They expressed their faith that their God was able to deliver them from the fiery furnace, but then demonstrated their true faith with the assertion "but if not..." If it were not in God's plan to save them, they would still decline to worship the idol and would only worship and serve their true God. I'm sure that Pres. Monson would not have lost faith if it had been Francis' time to go. And I don't know if Pres. Monson's expressions of faith changed any outcomes in the situation with his wife. But I agree with Jen that accepting the Lord's will for us, even when we don't get what we pray for and deeply desire, is where the true challenges lie.

Great story....thanks for sharing it. I think the important thing to remember is that we need to have faith in God's will for us and if God's will is to allow someone to die, or be disabled, injured, etc. we must remember that having faith in His will is having sufficient faith to have that person healed...it was just not part of the Lord's plan. Accepting the Lord's will for us is where the deepest challenges of our life will occur, however, as we trust in Him He will sustain us come what may.

Hi Steve--you make a good point. I appreciate your contribution to the topic.

When I have feelings as you've described I try to focus my thoughts on those things the Lord has blessed me with, which are many. I like the following scripture:

...I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions... Alma 36:3
