...declare repentance and faith on the Savior, and remission of sins by baptism, and by fire, yea, even the Holy Ghost.

Hi Tim,

I think you say it-like it is.

A friend of mine sent me an account of an incident that took place where a half dozen priesthood bearers were called on to give a blessing to an individual who was troubled by evil spirits. It turned out there were many evil spirits. They spoke through this individual and said some very interesting things.

If I were to name the men there you would recognize most of their names. The notes to what took place were given to me in confidence so I can't relate more, but this account and others I have been witness to leave no doubt what you say is true.

For those who have been endowed, we received additional instruction in the temple about how Satan works. The idea that the followers of Satan that were cast out can possess the bodies of the disobedient is ridiculed and mocked today, even by members of the church who do not understand or accept this doctrine.

Nevertheless, it is true, even in our more enlightened times. We read much in the New Testament about the good that the Savior did as we went about casting out devils, defined as the evil spirits that dwell in the hearts of men. He gave his apostles this same authority and charge to free men from the grasp of the adversary.

Our modern LDS history is replete with examples of missionaries and faithful priesthood bearers freeing people from the grip of the evil spirits that held them bound. We do not hear or read so much about this today. Why do you think that is?

I suspect that it is precisely because so many, even within the church, mock or ridicule this basic fact of life - men and women are still influenced by and often possessed by evil spirits, even if just for a moment. It’s just the way things work in this world.
