Listening, Two Way Prayer–For the Intellectual Mormon Too
On the way to have my car oil changed the other day, and being in a hurry, without really looking, I reached for a book to pass the time. I took it off of a book shelf where my wife had been sorting old books. The one I took turned out to be by Stephen R. Covey, Spiritual Roots of Human Relations.
I came across a couple of paragraphs that I thought were meaningful, especially to those who think of themselves as intellectually blessed and therefore don't really need much in the way of "the things of the Spirit". Most of us who are less blessed in things of the intellect have a hard time believing that anyone would see themselves that way. However, they do exist and on occasion will say so. Apparently, brother Covey had such individuals in mind when he wrote the following:
Few things will inspire self-honesty and humility more than genuine, listening, two-way prayer. It brings us into living contact with the light and Spirit of Christ. In this attitude of perfect honesty, humility, reaching out, and dedication, we can literally have the Holy Ghost as our guide and companion; and he will bestow upon us a witness of the divinity of Jesus Christ.
However intelligent and knowledgeable we may be, unless we have a real and personal experience with the Spirit of God, we will know no more about Christ than the man blind from birth knows about light and sight, however glib he may be in describing the anatomy of the eye or the properties of light. P. 60.
Following the Savior at a Distance, or Up Close
As members of the church we can follow the Savior at a distance, or up close, the choice is ours.
The scriptures provide examples of those who are close to the Lord, as well as those who follow Him, but at a distance. Those who follow at a distance can draw nearer to the Lord, maintain their distance, or fall away altogether. And of course, those who are close to the Lord can move even nearer to the Lord---or sadly, move away, and follow at a distance, or even fall away.
The Book of Mormon provides examples of various kinds of followers.
Following—at a Distance
Amulek
Amulek understood enough about the Lord to recognize His hand in the preservation of the Nephites. He also testified that he had been “called many times” but would not hear. He had other things to do, and chose to resist the Spirit’s invitation to draw closer to the Lord. This is a form of rebellion against God, also known as a hardened heart (Alma 10:5-6).

Are God’s Promises Being Realized in Your Life?
The scriptures contain many promises. Consider the following short list:
1. The Lord answers prayers—3 Nephi 18:20
2. Keeping the commandments brings happiness—Mosiah 2:41
3. Supported in trials and troubles—Alma 36:3
4. Gift of the Holy Ghost—2 Nephi 31:13
Life has many ups and downs. The list above contains promises for both the ups, and downs of life. Where are you at in your life as you read this? Are you up or down? Is life going well spiritually and temporally or is it just the opposite? Either way, the Lord says he will bless us if we remain faithful.
Friday Quiz: How Are We Reconciled to the Father?
Can you complete the following Book of Mormon scripture to answer the question: how are we reconciled to the Father?
Wherefore, beloved brethren, be reconciled unto him...
“My Blood Shall Not Cleanse Them If They Hear Me Not”
The Lord has said it is His work and glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. Apparently, even for a God, His work is not without its difficulties. Consider the following verse of scripture:
...they will not repent...the cup of mine indignation is full; for behold, my blood shall not cleanse them if they hear me not. D&C 29:17
Who is the Lord speaking to in this verse?
Alma teaches that the Lord speaks by way of command to those who belong to the church, and by way of invitation to those who do not belong to the church (Alma 5:62).
