Mitch, Michaela, Sister of Jared,

Thanks to each of you for commenting.

Alma 34 is one of the best parts of the BoM

The analogy of debt being canceled communicates well.

The idea of "provisional" is interesting. I'll need to check that out.

Strong's Lexicon lists the Greek word for remission as aphesis- 1)release from bondage or imprisonment

2) forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty

Each act that is considered a "sin" carries with it a consequence or penalty that the law of justice requires reparation for. The law of mercy allowed Christ to "pay" the penalties for those who would repent and come unto Him. But mercy cannot rob justice and justice requires us to forsake sinful behaviors and humble ourselves to the influence of Christ and allow Him to change us into something better than we were before. If we do not fulfill those requirements, we may be required to suffer the consequences of our actions ourselves until the debt is fully paid.

According to Joseph Smith, the remission of our sins is "provisional" until we have had our calling and election made sure-at which point we become justified/sanctified forever. This of course takes a long time, even our whole lives, but it is something we all should be striving for.

When I think of the remission of sins, I like to think of it as if sin is a disease like cancer that has gone remission, or dormant. In terms of debt, remission is having the debt cancelled and pardoned.

Alma 34 teaches that our repentance is needed to claim mercy.
