We get inoculated with a benign form of a virus so that our bodies can build up immunity to the active form of the disease. But being exposed to the truth about Mormon history, for instance, isn’t inoculation. Truth is not a disease. It is our water-down, sugar-coated, half-true version of history that is the disease, and we’ve all been exposed to it for so long that what we need is surgery to excise the malignant myths we’ve allowed to grow within us.

The only way to kill some weeds, to use another metaphor, is to expose the roots to sunlight. This is what we need to do with Mormon history. If we expose half-truths and “faith-promoting” myths to the light of day, we may find ourselves uncomfortable at first. But over time, true sunlight will allow a healthy crop of truth to grow in place of the weeds we’ve been sowing.

I believe that the insights and scriptures that you offered shed light on the only way that anyone can become inoculated as you put it. I had to go through that process, although I did not spend a day and a night praying, but maybe so in aggregate.

There are a lot of things in the Bible, especially in the Old Testament (the story of Jepthah for one) that just strike me the wrong way, but my spiritual experiences (that went much further than just a pleasant feeling in the bosom) are just as real to me as a slap in the face and have engendered in my a faith in the Christ and the Father, a trust that the promises they have made will be kept. So all of the things that I do not understand and have problems with in the scriptures and the church today I have put on a shelf knowing that I will get the answers in God’s own due time.
