“Be Converted, that I May Heal You”

The Savior visited the Nephites after his resurrection. There are many things the Savior could have taught on this momentous occasion. What he chose to teach is certainly important to his followers. Following is brief review of the Savior’s teachings.

When the Savior died on the cross in Jerusalem “three days of darkness” was given as a sign to the inhabitants of the earth (see 1 Nephi 19:10–12; Helaman 14:20–21).

Among the Nephites, the three days of darkness was accompanied by a terrible tempest and physical upheavals. Many people died! Near the end of the three days of darkness, a voice was heard explaining in detail the destruction of various cities along with the inhabitants and the reason why they were destroyed (see 3 Nephi 9:1-12).

13 O all ye that are spared because ye were more righteous than they, will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?

15 Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are.  (3 Nephi 9:13, 15)

There are two question in verse 13 that need to be considered:

1.  Why are those who are spared referred to as “more righteous” than those who died?

The answer is found in 3 Nephi 10:12.

12 And it was the more righteous part of the people who were saved, and it was they who received the prophets and stoned them not; and it was they who had not shed the blood of the saints, who were spared—

2. What does it mean to be “righteous”, but not converted and healed?

3 Nephi 9:20 helps to answer this question. The Savior teaches about the conversion of the Lamanites, saying,

And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion… (3 Nephi 9:20)

The more righteous were spared because they received the prophets, but hadn’t received the baptism by the Spirit for full conversion. This is why the Savior said, “…return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you.”

The main message the Savior gave the Nephites can be summed up by the following commit made by Elder Bruce R. McConkie:

We worship the Father, in the name of the Son, by the power of the Holy Ghost. Elder McConkie, ”. The Promised Messiah, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1978, p. 13.)

A Few Thoughts to Consider as We Move Into 2015

I’ve cruised, posted, and written in the Bloggernacle for seven years. It’s been an interesting experience.

My initial goal in coming to the Bloggernacle was to mingle with LDS who are seeking to fulfill their baptismal covenant by receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. I assumed that with the vastness of the internet’s reach I’d find multiple sites where church members discussed things of the Spirit and shared spiritual experiences in a meaningful way. However, I quickly learned that most LDS who post and comment in the Bloggernacle have other priorities.

LDS author James Farrell observed:

“Many [LDS] today carry a secret: We do not love what we have been commanded to love. We do not love what is holy. Although we might reverence things that are deemed holy – the temple, for example, and the scriptures, and the Sabbath – we do not love them. Not really. Not with our whole souls.” The Holy Secret, James Farrell

The apostle John counseled:

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.  If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15

There is a significant difference between reverencing the Lord and loving Him. If one truly desires to be a follower of Christ and to be perfected in Him then the first order of Spiritual business is to fulfill our baptismal covenant and do what is necessary to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Without taking this step everything else we accomplish has less meaning and our accomplishments are more of terrestrial order than celestial.

Lorenzo Snow taught:

There are men among us who possess the gift of healing, and might have great faith; but they do not exercise the gift, they do not live for it, and, therefore, do not have the power to use it so effectually as they might… I wish to impress upon you, my brethren and sisters that there are Elders among us endowed with Spiritual gifts that may be brought into exercise through the aid of the Holy Ghost.  The gifts of the Gospel must be cultivated by diligence and perseverance.  The ancient Prophets when desiring some peculiar blessing, or important knowledge, revelation or vision, would sometimes fast and pray for days and even weeks for that purpose. JD 23:194 -195, Lorenzo Snow, May 6th, 1882

In closing, I would like to acknowledge that out of all the experiences I’ve had in life, there is nothing that even comes close to the beauty and splendor of the manifestation of the Spirit. I hope to live my life in the coming year in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.

The Lord Seeth Fit to Try His People’s Faith

Before being called as a General Authority the Cook’s had their patience and faith tired. This account shows how the Lord deals with His people, how He trieth their faith and then rewards them according to their faithfulness.

The following account is from the life of Elder Gene R. Cook. It was published in his book, Raising Up a Family to the Lord, Pages XXII to XXVII.

“…the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith. Mosiah 23:21.

“Let me share a personal experience that taught us to better trust in the Lord even in the face of challenges and trials. Perhaps this example will start us at the beginning, before children arrive in a family on earth.

After my mission, I had a great desire to be married. Part of that feeling came from a young lady who waited two and a half years for me. More importantly, though, I had studied the scriptures enough to know, in some measure, the great value of being married and raising a family.

When I returned home, things did not work out with the young lady who had waited for me. Seven months later, though, I married Janelle Schlink in the Mesa Arizona Temple. We both had great desires to have a family and were pleased and delighted that at last the time had come when we could do so. Our friends began to have their families-a boy here, a girl there. Nine months passed, a year, a year and a half, two years of waiting. Still no children came.

I gave my wife priesthood blessings two or three times during those years, promising that she would conceive and bear children. Still nothing happened. Three years, then three and a half years went by, and then four. During this time, my wife had a miscarriage that was very traumatic. That was the only time I saw her discouraged. I suppose our desires and expectations were so high that to finally conceive and then to lose the baby was devastating.

Finally five years passed by. We determined to seriously consider adoption. I spent a number of occasions alone over a period of weeks praying about it, as my wife felt better about adopting than I did. Finally, I definitely received an answer that we should adopt. It helped me when I recalled that Jesus was adopted by Joseph, the husband of Mary; that Joseph Smith had two adopted children; and that one of my best friends had just adopted a baby girl. All in all, it felt like the right thing to do.

We put our names in for adoption through the Relief Society and were informed that it would be perhaps a year or more until we would be able to have a baby. The wait began.

A Priesthood Blessing

About this same time, we went to the Arizona Temple. After the session, we were visiting with a good brother, a longtime family friend. As we visited, it was determined that he ought to provide a blessing to my wife. We were overjoyed, as we knew that he was very close to the Lord. We told him we would be glad to have the blessing but thought we should fast and pray about it. We set a date for a few days later when we would all fast and come together for the blessing.

The appointed day arrived. We went to this good brother’s home in the spirit of fasting and prayer. He gave my wife a beautiful blessing, very similar to those I had given her. He promised her that she would have natural children.

We left his home filled with the Spirit. To our great delight, about six weeks later the doctor confirmed that she was pregnant. We surely thanked the Lord in prayer and in fasting for the blessing we had received, trying to put as much effort into giving thanks as we had in asking for the blessing. We also called the adoption agency and had our names taken off the list, saying, “We’re going to have our own baby now. Adoption won’t be necessary.” Our joy increased as the months passed by.

Added Trials

About four months into the pregnancy, I arrived home from work one day to find my wife weeping. She had just arrived home from the doctor’s office; the doctor had found that the fetus was dead and would have to be removed immediately.

This was one of the only times I have hardened my heart against the Lord. “What more can we do?” I thought. “We’re trying to keep the commandments. Thou hast commanded us to multiply and replenish the earth. We’ve fasted. We’ve prayed. We’ve had blessings. We’ve waited for five years. Thou hast not answered our prayers. And now we have to go through another miscarriage.”

My wife said, “We’ve got to go right now. The hospital is waiting for us.” Her bag was packed, and we went to the car to leave. As we drove out, she told me we ought to go by and tell this good brother and his wife about it. I said, “No, absolutely not.” Feeling as I did at that moment, the last person I wanted to talk to was this spiritual priesthood holder who had given her the blessing. I refused to go.

As we drove off, my wife persisted. I continued to tell her no, that we wouldn’t stop. Fortunately, this good brother’s home was on the way to the hospital. She continued to persist. Finally I said, “Well, you go in. I’ll just wait in the car.” But that would not do; she thought I should be the one to tell them. I finally consented to briefly go in.

We knocked on the door. As soon as the man’s wife saw us, she knew something was wrong. I emotionally blurted out what had happened, asked her to tell her husband, and then turned to leave. However, this faithful brother was in the next room and heard what was said. He immediately walked into the living room, fell to his knees, and said, “Let’s pray.” His wife knelt down, and my wife went over and knelt down. I was left standing there with no desire whatsoever to pray. Finally, probably from the pressure, I knelt down as well.

Then I learned a great lesson that has helped me with others on many occasions since that time. I heard a servant of the Lord pray with all of his soul. He poured out his heart, telling the Lord we didn’t know why this had happened but that the priesthood blessing was still in full force. He said that we would humbly submit to this trial in spite of the apparent problems and difficulties and our strong feelings about them. He said that we knew the Lord loved us, and that we loved the Lord and would do whatever he commanded us to do. He confirmed with the Lord that we would humbly submit to this trial and to any other that might come-that we would trust in God.

This great leader in the priesthood, in that brief prayer, softened my heart. He removed, by the Spirit, all of my anger. He invited the Spirit of the Lord to return to me and humbled me, for which I will be ever grateful. We then left, humbled in spirit even though still saddened. We went to the hospital, where the surgery was performed.

Adoption

A few days later I was again alone in prayer. I felt a strong impression that my wife and I should immediately call the Relief Society adoption agency and put our names back on the list for adoptions. “Do it now,” the Spirit whispered. “Right now!”

My wife and I immediately called them. They said, “We’re glad to reinstate your name on the list. However, because you canceled out, it will take about a year and a half wait now.”

We said, “Well, that’s all right. We just want our names back on the list.”

About three weeks later, I received a phone call at work. The Relief Society sister on the other end of the line said, “Would you like to have a baby son? If so, come and get him right now.” I called my wife and rushed home. We could hardly believe our good fortune! We ran to the store to buy some diapers. We didn’t even have any place to put the baby.

When we got to the adoption agency, they left the baby in a room with us and said, “We’ll give you a few minutes to look him over and decide whether you really want him.” He was unclothed. We checked him over from head to foot and found him in perfect condition. We just wept for joy.

We told them we would be very pleased to have him. We signed the papers, and the caseworker said, “As you know, there were many, many people before you on the list. You would have had a long time yet to wait, even if you had not taken your name off the list the first time. But as we went through the pictures of the families, we tried to place the baby but couldn’t. We went over and over the pictures of people who were on the list way ahead of you. None of them felt right. We finally got down to some of the relatively new applicants, namely the Cooks, and felt the Spirit tell us, ‘Place the boy there.’ For that reason we called you.”

We were overjoyed as we took the baby home. He ended up sleeping in a chest of drawers for the first few nights. We didn’t have furniture, clothing, blankets, or anything for him as he was totally unexpected.

What a great joy to us to finally have a son! I’m sure we must have been the happiest parents in all of Mesa, Arizona. He was our boy. About a year and a half later, after the adoption was final, we had the great joy of taking him to the Arizona Temple to have him sealed to us for time and all eternity. At last we had a son. At last we were on our way to fulfilling the injunction of the Lord to multiply and replenish the earth.

Promises Fulfilled

About a year and a half later, six and a half years into our marriage, our first natural son arrived. A year and a half later another son came. Then a daughter arrived less than two years later. Another daughter graced our home three years after that. Then another son came less than two years later. He was followed by another son four years after that. Three years later another beautiful daughter arrived. How blessed we have been with our children!

Truly the Lord answers prayers and fulfills all of his promises. He has said, “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you” (3 Nephi 18:20).

How true also are the words of Moroni, “I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith” (Ether 12:6).

True it is that “after much tribulation come the blessings” (D&C 58:4).

It is easy to see, after the fact, the involvement of the Lord in an experience such as this one. I’m sure having had that challenge of no children for so many years caused us to do our best to be prepared when the children did come. We thank the Lord for a good family, as I’m sure you do as you think of your family.

I bear testimony that the Lord fulfills his promises. If we will do our part, be patient, and keep the commandments, the Lord will answer our prayers concerning our families. He will bless us in our sacred duty to raise up our children unto him.”

He Marvelled at Their Unbelief

The Savior while in mortality did many mighty works. He raised the dead, healed all kinds of diseases, restored sight to the blind, cured withered limbs, and cast out devils. However, in his home town of Nazareth is was unable to do mighty works. Here we learn important principles of unbelief.

And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
And he marvelled because of their unbelief… Mark 6:5 – 6

Mark explains why unbelief was prevalent in Nazareth. Many there remembered him and said:

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. Mark 6:3

God is “limited” and “challenged” by unbelief. He wants to bestow greater blessings on his followers, but many won’t have it.

The prophet Joseph Smith saw unbelief at work among the early Mormon converts.

“I have tried for a number of years to get the minds of the Saints prepared to receive the things of God; but we frequently see some of them, after suffering all they have for the work of God, will fly to pieces like glass as soon as anything comes that is contrary to their traditions.” History of the Church, 6:184–85

Church members are taught to diligently seek the Holy Ghost, instead far too many seek diligently for the things of this world, an act of unbelief.

“…your mind has been on the things of the earth more than on the things of me, your Maker…and you have not given heed unto my Spirit…” D&C 30:2

We certainly need to have our minds on the things of this earth. The difficulty comes when we focus so intently on the things of the earth we fail to give heed to the Spirit.

Not giving heed to the Spirit is less of an offense than denying the Spirit, but in either case repentance is needed. Both of these offenses decrease faith thereby limiting the Lord’s ability to extend blessing to us.

The people of Nazareth limited the works the Savior did among them because of unbelief. How many reading this post feel that they have limited the blessings Heavenly Father has for them because of unbelief?

How many suffer health problems unnecessarily due to unbelief, not only the lack of faith of the ones who are sick, but the lack of faith among those who exercise their faith and priesthood in behalf of the sick?

How many have not obtained guidance from the Holy Ghost because of unbelief? How many Bishop’s, Stake Presidents, even General Authorities, could do more mighty works if they enjoyed greater faith?

Acts of Unbelief

Many people in Nazareth exercised their unbelief because they thought of Jesus as a carpenter. What are some of the things we do that are acts of unbelief?

I’ll finish by listing a few things that I’m familiar with and invite you to make your own list:

1. Sustaining those called to lead with our hands, but not our heart
2. Treating lightly the Book of Mormon (and other scriptures)
3. Praying without real intent
4. Failing to repent of our favorite sins
5. Being more active in the church than the gospel
6. Coming to the Savior without a broken heart

Hearken, O ye Gentiles (Especially LDS church members)

1 HEARKEN, O ye Gentiles, and hear the words of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, which he hath commanded me that I should speak concerning you, for, behold he commandeth me that I should write, saying:
2 Turn, all ye Gentiles, from your wicked ways; and repent of your evil doings, of your lyings and deceivings, and of your whoredoms, and of your secret abominations, and your idolatries, and of your murders, and your priestcrafts, and your envyings, and your strifes, and from all your wickedness and abominations, and come unto me, and be baptized in my name, that ye may receive a remission of your sins, and be filled with the Holy Ghost, that ye may be numbered with my people who are of the house of Israel.  3 Nephi 30:1-2

We live in a day when these verses of scripture are relevant. The daily national and local news broadcast report these kinds of evils daily.

Ten years a ago President Hinckley said:

I do not know that things were worse in the times of Sodom and Gomorrah. … We see similar conditions today. They prevail all across the world. I think our Father must weep as He looks down upon His wayward sons and daughters.”  “Standing Strong and Immovable,” Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, 10 Jan. 2004, 20.

I’ve lived long enough to remember when people along the Wasatch didn’t bother to lock their doors. We felt safe.

Nowadays, people are turning to gun ownership for self protection. When I was young guns were purchased for hunting. In Utah, it wasn’t uncommon to see pickup trucks with a rife hanging on a rack in the back window driving down the street. In our day, people get alarmed when a firearm is visible. This fear stems from school shootings and other kinds of gun violence.

Another telltale-sign of the day we’re living in is the prevalence of doubt among church members and the emergence of  post-mormons. I believe the reason doubt and apostasy is on the rise is due to the affluent day we live in (See Helaman 12). It is so easy to forget the Lord and harden our hearts because of prosperity.

One of these days, the Mormon prophets are going to warn America that the judgments of God are at the door unless they repent.

And I say unto you, that if the Gentiles do not repent after the blessing which they shall receive…it shall come to pass, saith the Father, that the sword of my justice shall hang over them at that day; and except they repent it shall fall upon them, saith the Father, yea, even upon all the nations of the Gentiles.
3 Nephi 20:15 & 20

I think it is an excellent time for church members to prepare spiritually and temporally for the events of the last days. However, I wouldn’t develop a bunker mentality. I don’t think some of the current books like “Visions of Glory” and other like books should dominate our thoughts of the future. I keep up on these kinds of books, but after reading them I ask myself, “what value did this book add to my understanding?” The answer has been, very little. The restoration scriptures and teachings of the living prophets provide all we need to know.

The apostles and prophets are not pointing our attention to a bleak future. We should study their messages and let what they say dominate our thoughts.

Robber Holds Gun to Apostle’s Head and Pulls the Trigger

The following statement was printed in the Deseret News on May 30, 2009

Statement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

Elder and Sister Russell M. Nelson were on a church assignment in Mozambique, where they were accompanied by Elder William W. and Sister Parmley of the Africa Southeast Area Presidency and President Blair J. and Sister Packard, mission president of the Mozambique Maputo Mission.

On Friday evening they were having dinner together in the mission president’s home when armed assailants entered the home and robbed them. We don’t have complete information yet, but we understand that Sister Packard’s arm was broken. In addition, she and others suffered some superficial injuries, mainly cuts and bruises.

Elder and Sister Nelson will continue their assignment over the weekend as planned. Local authorities are investigating the matter.

The Rest of the Story

A few days ago (about 2010), I learned that Elder Nelson recently spoke at a regional conference in Utah county and related more details about the robbery. Elder Nelson spoke about angels and how they watch over us. Elder Nelson then applied his teachings about angels to what happened during the robbery. He said that when the robber held the gun to his head and pulled the trigger the gun didn’t discharge.

I would say this experience is an important part of church history. I decided to look into it further and contacted someone who is close to Elder Nelson and they verified the account.

Update: In Elder Nelson newest book, Accomplishing the Impossible, on page 25, he provides more details about what happened at the mission home.

He begins his account with the following scripture. “I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up (3 Nephi 28:30).

“My wife Wendy and I are the beneficiaries of that promise. On one occasion, we were attacked by armed men with malicious intent. They announced their purpose: to kidnap her, and to kill me. After they maliciously molested us in those evil objectives, they became totally foiled. A gun to my head failed to fire. And my wife was suddenly released from their hideous grasp. Then they disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.”

Update Oct. 2024. Since this post was written a new book provides additional details. I added this because thousands of people have come to this post since President Nelson spoke about it in Oct. 2024 General Conference.

From “Insights From A Prophet’s Life” by Sherri Dew published in 2019, beginning on page 255 we learn more about what happened.

“In all the mayhem, one robber went directly to Elder Nelson, put a gun to his head, announced that they were going to kill him and kidnap his wife, and then pulled the trigger. The gun made a clicking noise but didn’t fire. The misfire infuriated the robber, who then backed up a couple of steps, got a run at Elder Nelson to use the full force and strength of his leg, and kicked Elder Nelson to the floor where he lay almost lifeless, though his mind was spinning. He was certain he was about to die. ‘I thought myself, ‘I am going to pass out of this life and into the next, and this is going to be a very interesting experience’, Elder Nelson remembered, ‘most interesting of all is that I was calm.’…I honestly don’t remember even feeling it when they knocked me to the ground. And the misfire on the gun, well, that had to be angels watching over us. Both Wendy and I know there were angels there to help us.

Sister Nelson could see the print of the boot on her husband’s face, and she immediately began to attend to him. But by the next morning, he didn’t look any the worse for wear.”

Preparing for LDS Conference this Weekend

I’m looking forward to conference this weekend. In preparation I made a list of things I can do to prepare. What would you add to or delete from this list?

1.  Pray for those who will speak in conference this weekend.

2.  Pray that I’ll be guided by the Spirit to hear and understand those messages the Lord knows I need to hear.

3.  Thank the Lord for my many blessings. Pray with specificity for those things I stand in need of.

4.  Repent and ask the Lord to forgive me of my weakness and sins.

5.  Pray for church members who are struggling with a doubt.

6.  Arrange my schedule so I can hear every talk. Take notes of those talks that were of particular interest to me.

“I plead with you to do with determination the simple things that will move you forward spiritually.”  Elder Eyring, BYU, Jan 3, 1999

What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same. D&C 1:38
